When? February 17- March 10 2020
Ok, so Mercury retrograde is an event that happens three to four times a year, when the universe forms a pact to destroy all of your plans, daily commutes, and operations — one botched communication at a time. JOKES!!!
You can actually make Mercury retrograde positive, you just have to be strategic
Mercury retrograde has such a negative reputation, right? But Mercury retrograde is actually very necessary for helping us to raise our consciousness and has a specific purpose that many people don’t understand.
When you learn how to use the energy of Mercury Retrograde, you can have it work in your favour, rather than against you.
The first step is to understand the role of Mercury.
Here we go:
There are three phases to Mercury Retrograde: the Pre-shadow phase, the Retrograde phase and the Post-Shadow phase.
The shadow phase happens about two weeks before and two weeks after the planet’s backspin. Before and after a planet is retrograde, it goes through a period called “stationing,” where it’s adjusting to the U-turn. We may feel its effects ramping up or winding down…like the lingering fumes of a car with a bad exhaust system…Ya know?
The Pre-Shadow phase is when we may start to feel some small of the effects of Mercury Retrograde. This is the time to start preparing for it. You may like to plan your schedule so that you don’t have to do anything too major or life changing during the Retrograde itself. The Pre-Shadow period starts on February 2nd 2020.
The Retrograde itself begins on February 16th and ends March 10th. Those three weeks are when you need to be on alert and mindful of its possible effects.
The Post-Shadow phase ends March 29th. This is a time for integration and processing everything that you have experienced and learned during the Retrograde.
Firstly, let’s talk about what “Mercury retrograde” actually means.
It’s an astronomical event that occurs when the planet Mercury appears to move backward in its orbit due to its relative location to the Earth as the two planets orbit the Sun.
Astrologically, Mercury retrograde is a time when aspects of life that come under Mercury’s rulership (written/verbal communication, daily commutes/short-distance travel, technology used for communication and travel, the analytical mind, relationships with siblings and neighbours) slow down, and their standard mode of operation is disrupted.
Most people equate the chaos that ensues from Mercury retrograde’s trademark missed connections, and travel and communication delays with dread. But what if instead of dreading this periodic disruption, we harnessed its energy to make our lives easier?
Mercury is the planet of communication, he rules over how we express ourselves, how we think and how we communicate our ideas and feelings to the outside world.
When Mercury goes retrograde, he helps us to shift our focus away from expressing outwards and into expressing inwards.
You may find that lots of interesting discussions take place or that you experience some miscommunication with people. Be mindful of any time restrictions or budgets that you may need to adhere to. Money can often be an issue, so just make sure you are prepared for any unexpected expenses, to avoid any potential financial hardship.
Mercury retrograde gives us an opportunity to go within and to work out how we really feel and how we want to express our ideas and thoughts with the world.
Think of it this way, when Mercury is moving direct he is helping us to speak our truth and communicate to the world. When Mercury goes retrograde however, he gives us the opportunity to assess our truth and how we have been communicating it to the world.
This dual process has to exist in order for us to really consciously understand who we are and how we choose to communicate this.
When Mercury goes retrograde, he gives us time to work out those deeper, darker parts of our psyche in order to help us tune into our soul truth.
Mercury retrograde is a powerful time to get real with yourself and to unearth all of those emotions, thoughts and feelings that have been buried inside for so long.
The beauty about Mercury retrograde too, is that in order to heal and transgress he doesn’t require us to shout our truth from the highest roof. Instead, he gives us the gift of holding our truth close to our heart, and knowing that our truth is all that matters.
When we know our truth, we know who we are. When we know who we are, we are able to stand up and express this to the world and that is how we merge with our highest path.
Mercury retrograde does come with a few annoyances, this is true but underneath it all it is such a powerful time of regeneration and healing.
In order to work with Mercury Retrograde it is important not to make any new decisions, that are binding or require a contract. The reason for this is because we are in an “assessing truth” phase, and what may be your truth during a Mercury Retrograde, may no longer be your truth after Mercury has worked its magic on you.
Mercury Retrograde however, is a really good time to revisit the past and to assess whether your way of communicating with the world has benefited you or needs to be changed.
It is also a good time to go back over projects, redo things that need updating, or to complete projects that you have already been working on.
Mercury Retrograde is also a good time to journal and to get your thoughts out onto paper.
While traditional avenues of communication may not be supported when Mercury is in retrograde, it is a great time for self-reflection and to think about what you really want to say.
Mercury retrograde is not the best time to have a difficult conversation, but if you can’t wait, making the time for self-reflection will help you to be a more thoughtful communicator.
Listening to your intuition and the subtler voice of your heart is also favoured under Mercury Retrograde.
The best advice I can offer anyone for Mercury Retrograde is to take things slow, to keep things simple, and to get in touch with that inner voice.
Nothing that Mercury retrograde throws our way is insurmountable, no matter how disruptive it may feel at the time. And none of it is essentially negative or bad. So if Mercury retrograde messes with you, consider yourself blessed with an opportunity to wake up and smell the coffee, embrace the unexpected and be prepared for a new perspective.
Despite the bad press, Mercury retrograde is actually our friend if we’ll only allow it to speak its often unwelcome message! It will reveal to us where adjustment is needed, within and without, and where our attention and focus may be hindering rather than helping us. It’s sent not to frustrate us but to show where flaws exist in our thinking and perception, which need to be addressed.
It also gives us a valuable opportunity to revisit ground covered in the previous few months and correct any decisions or communications that need further attention. This is not the heavens wanting to trip us up, No, this is the heavens giving us the chance to review, reflect and try a different way.
Mercury’s regular retrograde cycle is a self-correcting mechanism of the universe, enabling things that need adjustment to be adjusted before it’s too late! And for that reason alone we should welcome Mercury Retrograde with open arms…
